The exhibit presents 40 photos of the tourist city in Slovenia Maribor made by the young Slovenian photographer Miha Sagadin. Maribor received the status of the “European Capital of Culture 2012” according to the results of the annual EU competition.
“Last year within the framework of the project that presented cultural capitals of Europe to the visitors of the library, we had an exhibition dedicated to the Estonian city of Tallinn,” said at the opening of the exhibition Olena Pohonets, manager of the Department of Social and Cultural Activities of the National Parliamentary Library of Ukraine. “Then historical monuments and central squares of the city were widely presented in the photos. Visitors looked at the photographs but could not feel the modern flow of cultural life of Tallinn. At this exhibition we see moments of various artistic celebrations in Maribor during the year. In fact, the presented photographs demonstrate why this city became the cultural capital of Europe this year.”
At the launch of the exhibit Nata a Prah, Charge d’Affaires of the Republic of Slovenia told the audience that in 2012 over 400 cultural events took place in Maribor along with the neighboring cities, therefore, the city has deserved the status of the cultural capital of Europe.
“Nearly 400,000 people from around the world visited Maribor as the cultural capital of Europe,” Prah told The Day. “Judging from the results of this year we observe a nearly 50 percent increase in Ukrainian tourists who travel to Slovenia. Many traditionally visit Maribor. Our culture becomes more popular among Ukrainians. It is nice that the photo exhibition initiated by the National Parliamentary Library of Ukraine is also dedicated to this.”
The exhibit “Maribor Mosaic – European Capital of Culture 2012 – Moments in the Network of Eternity” will be open in the hall on the second floor of the National Parliamentary Library of Ukraine until November 11.
