Zaporizhian Maria Pomazan sets record at World Athletics Championship for Disabled
At the World Athletics Championship for Disabled in New Zealand a native of Zaporizhia Maria Pomazan set the world record in shot put with a result of 10.61 meters! With this she beat her previous record (10.51 m), which she set in the Athletics Championship of Ukraine for sportsmen with locomotor apparatus problems. Maria is a student of the Zaporizhia National University; she’s been in training in the Zaporizhia regional center of physical training and sport for the disabled “Invasport” with her coach Tamara Edisherashvili. Maria Pomazan, who suffered from disabilities already as a child, traversed a difficult path to the summit of world sports. But her talent, work and persistence allowed her to overcome all the obstacles on this way. The head of the regional state administration Borys Petrov said that Maria “made our region and our state famous all over the world… with her example she gives hope to all Zaporizhian citizens with special needs — that despite difficulties they are able to find ways for self-realization.” Not only the citizens of Zaporizhia, but all Ukrainians can find solace in Pomazan’s story.
Union of Ukrainians in Russia safe for now
The Supreme Court of Russia has suspended the proceedings, initiated at the Russian Ministry of Justice’s request, to liquidate the Union of Ukrainians in Russia (UUR), informs UNIAN. This was reported by the co-chairman of the UUR Valerii Semenenko. “The Supreme Court has decided to suspend the trial to consider our petition to the Tver Court of Moscow on cancelling the Ministry’s of Justice warning,” Semenenko said. He explained that the UUR received the corresponding warnings from the Ministry of Justice for him having taken part in TV programs. Valerii Semeneko noted that if the Supreme Court does decide to liquidate the union, the UUR plans to submit a cassation appeal. “The work in court instances can be delayed by half a year or even longer,” he said. In the statement of claim, the Ministry of Justice of Russia has requested that the Supreme Court liquidate the UUR. “As a result of an inspection, it was detected that while violating paragraph two of article fifteen of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, the UUR does not follow the regulations of effective laws and its own statute,” reads the statement of claim. On January 27 the Supreme Court of Russia made a final decision about liquidating the Federal National Cultural Autonomy of Ukrainians of Russia.
