Dnipro to prepare for Euro-2012 guests
All piers and quays in Kyiv, Kaniv, Cherkasy, Kremenchuk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson are to be operational by 2012. The State Service of Sea and River Transport (Ukrmorrichflot) will supervise the resumption of their operation. According to a Ministry of Infrastructure press release, service discounts are to be introduced for cruisers by the river docks. Within the framework of the preparation of Ukraine’s main waterway for the Euro-2012, one-time temporary permits for foreign ships are planned to be revoked. This will allow tourists to reach the capital by water. Moreover, Ukrmorrichflot has initiated, and will promote the building of marinas for small-size vessels. It will also continue restoring hydraulic facilities in order to enhance their capacity. “After holding the [2012] championship we will continue developing the infrastructure of our internal waterways in order to guarantee safety for commercial navigation, tourism, water sports and leisure,” Serhii Kryzhanovsky, head of Ukrmorrichflot, emphasized. They will also pay extra attention to navigation development in order to guarantee seafaring safety. As it was noted in the press release, new communication and satellite navigation facilities will be introduced, and complete seafaring informatization will be implemented on the internal waterways. Experts from the state enterprises Ukrvodshliakh, River Pier Administration, Delta-pilot, Shipping Register of Ukraine and State Hydrographic Service of Ukraine will be invited for collaboration.
Ilyenko’s films to appear in Kaniv
This week, eight legendary films of director Yuri Ilyenko will be shown in Kaniv. The event’s initiator is the Ilyenko Film company, supported by State Service of Ukrainian Cinematography and the Oleksandr Dovzhenko Film Studio. As the Kaniv city council department of culture and tourism told The Day, the first film to be seen by Kaniv citizens will be the new version of A prayer for Hetman Mazepa. Ilyenko finished working on this film not long before his death. According to the department of culture and tourism specialist Viktoria Voiutska, the honorary opening of the Yuri Ilyenko film week will take place on January 22. The film’s lead Liudmyla Yefymenko, the director’s son and producer Pylyp Ilyenko, and various actors, cameramen and other crew members will come to visit Kaniv. “As for the tickets, for students, pupils and pensioners they will cost 10 hryvnias, for all others they will be 15 hryvnias. By the way, A prayer for Hetman Mazepa will be shown twice: on January 22 and 30,” said Voiutska. Kaniv citizens and guests will see such films as Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, A Spring for the Thirsty, The Eve of Ivan Kupalo, White Bird with Black Mark, Forest Song: Mavka, The Legend of Princess Olga and Swan Lake: the Zone. The organizers assure that all motion pictures will be digitally renewed within the state program for restoring and saving the cinematographic legacy of Yuri Ilyenko.
Charity project to mark Kyiv-Mohyla Academy’s 395th anniversary
Among the first to support this “Restoration” project and auction, scheduled for January 19, were Pavel Gudimov, Ukraine’s leading ethnic Russian guitarist; Oleh Skrypka, leader of the BB rock band, and the chamber New Era Orchestra. All proceeds will be channeled to the Old Academic Restoration Project, started by the academy’s celebrated graduate, Hetman Ivan Mazepa of Ukraine, back in 1704.
Says Serhii KVIT, current president of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy National University: “Our university is a venue of student-teacher intellectual debate, in the course of which the truth comes forth. We conduct research. Our university further offers material resources: our libraries, labs, and classrooms. The Academy is fortunate enough to still have the old unique architectural complex on the grounds that generates the unique aura, so our task is to preserve it for our descendants.”
Pavlo Gudimov selected 30 works by Ukraine’s leading artists for the auction. They are on display, January 13-18, 2011, pending auction at the Antonovychs’ Library on the campus. Skrypka performed traditional carols and later said: “I believe that we can build a better future only if we remember and respect our past. The carols I sang with the New Era Orchestra symbolize the continuity of Ukrainian traditions. Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is another such symbol that helps keep the Ukrainian nation [united]. We are the only ones who can uphold these symbols, keep them, and enrich them with modern trends. I see this as our number-one task today.”
