Berlusconi welcomes beautiful female immigrants

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi stated that his country welcomes immigrants, but only if they are beautiful girls, as reported by France Presse. The head of Italian government declared this at his meeting with the Prime Minister of Albania dedicated to illegal migration. The Italian opposition immediately responded to Berlusconi’s playful statement. Opposition press secretary Paola Pellegrini stated, “Berlusconi has again stooped to vulgar jokes. Against the background of human tragedy experienced by migrants, he has again placed women on the same footing as goods, making them fresh flesh ready for consumption.”

The Italian PM is currently undergoing divorce procedures with former actress Veronica Lario, who filed for divorce last year due to the politician’s scandalous friendship with an underage photo model.

First library for the visually impaired opens in Ivano-Frankivsk

Ivano-Frankivsk’s first computerized library for the blind was opened due to the special NVDA program installed on the computers. Now visually impaired people will have access to electronic books and the Internet, reports Ukrinform. This became possible due to an international grant worth 100,000 hryvnias, which the local society of the blind won last year within the framework of the “World without Borders” program. The disabled people remodeled the office and bought the necessary equipment and the consumables for this money. In addition to the computers with licensed software, the visitors can use more than 50 digital players and over 1,000 audiobooks, said Oksana Lohvin, head of the board of directors of the local Ukrainian Society of the Blind (USB), speaking to the mass media. All this helps the visually impaired people in learning new technologies. The USB is convinced that access to the electronic world will help them rehabilitate themselves in social terms faster and feel that they are full-fledged members of society. Special computer courses for the visually impaired will be organized in the library. The teacher will be Andrii Nechytailov, a blind man who has been using the computer over seven years and the Internet for five years.

Feed a Sparrow campaign continues in Ukraine

Until March 30, 2010, children will hand-feed sparrows and other urban birds in almost all large cities of Ukraine. According to the organizers of the All-Ukrainian Charitable Campaign “Feed a Sparrow,” the Cereal House company and All-Ukrainian youth organization “Regional Initiatives Foundation,” it should draw society’s attention to problems of children’s social-ecological education, as well as avian populations conservation. It is common knowledge that animals play a very special role in the upbringing of children, helping them to learn to love. At home, a cat or a dog can be such a friend. Learning to look after them, a young child simultaneously learns to appreciate his or her parents’ work, accumulates family values for his or her own future family, and learns to care for animals as for our little brothers and for nature in general. The sparrow is also a creature of nature, and it also needs love. However, according to the International Conservation Organizations Union “Birdlife International,” climate change, coupled with human activities, poses a threat of extinction to 43 percent of all bird species, including the sparrow. After the campaign comes to an end, a lottery will be held, and its winner will receive a digital camera as an encouragement prize. To take part in the draw, send your photos of bird-feeding children before the end of the campaign to the following addresses: 34 Vasylkivska St., 03022, Kyiv or P/O Box 180, 03127, Kyiv.
