The focus group has formed its opinion why one should read The Day

3 June, 2008 - 00:00

The Day is one of only a few newspapers — and the only sociopolitical periodical — with an English-language weekly digest. Thanks to our varied circle of experts, whose comments are regularly featured in the newspaper, foreigners can easily familiarize themselves with Ukraine and learn about current events in our country.

On May 30, the editorial office hosted a focus group to learn the reasons behind the popularity of our English-language digest and to analyze its intellectual content. Among the participants were regular readers of The Day, all of them young people, who are studying Philosophy and Political Science at Taras Shevchenko National University; the art director of the PR company Dzhem, the promotions manager of Burda Ukraine Publishers, and a teacher of French. According to them, the digest provides accurate and unbiased information and experts’ opinions. Since foreign language skills decline without regular practice, our newspaper is an opportunity for local readers to improve their English.

“The articles that are published in

The Day are topical and interesting. Compared to other English- language periodicals in Ukraine, The Day offers information about political, social, cultural, and historical events — in other words, a whole range of news pertaining to our life, not just entertainment. This is very important in my profession because we have to keep track of Ukraine’s sociopolitical life. We deal with foreign clients, and I have noticed that The Day is very helpful to them,” said Anastasia Friedrigson, the art director of the public relations company Dzhem, who is also a student at Wisconsin International University, Inc. Ukraine.

Anna Bei, who studies Political Science at Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv, commented: “We are studying English, and since I am a future political scientist, it is very interesting for me to read political information about Ukraine in English. I like the digest’s objective and unbiased information.”
