On November 14, Khatia Dekanoidze resigned as Chief of the National Police of Ukraine. In her farewell statement, she carefully described every objective she was able to meet over the year spent in office. However, Dekanoidze’s actions remain a controversial matter. The new national police has been the subject of widespread debate, since on the one hand, it is the patrol police in their new uniforms that are the face of the police reform, but on the other, many observers have expressed doubts regarding the effectiveness of such reforms, in particular accusing Dekanoidze of taking a superficial approach.
Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov posted on Facebook: “Khatia Dekanoidze was appointed Chief of the National Police of Ukraine on November 4, 2015 pursuant to a decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. Dekanoidze tendered her resignation letter to me on November 11, 2016. Over just a year, she came a long way under tough conditions, organized effective teamwork, and made a considerable contribution to reforming the Ministry. It was a difficult, but very important step, which will become part of the history of the Ukrainian police. I am glad that we had an effective manager and supporter with us in the person of Dekanoidze.”
Avakov stated that following Dekanoidze’s resignation, Vadym Troian became Acting Chief of the National Police.
