The former governor of the Utah state and former US ambassador to China Jon Huntsman announced about his intention to struggle for the post of the US president during the elections in 2012. Huntsman stated about his intention to run for president of the US during his meeting with voters in New Jersey, symbolically repeating the path of Ronald Reagan, in whose administration Huntsman once worked. In his election speech he complained that the United States was considerably weakened by the activity of previous administrations and promised to return the past glory to the US. The politician also stated that for the US it’s time to decrease its participation in the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq and start focusing on solving the country’s internal problems. According to experts, Huntsman is superior in the sphere of foreign policy compared to other presidential candidates from the Republicans.
In 2004 Huntsman won the governor election in Utah, gaining 57 percent of votes, and in 2008 he was reelected with 75 percent of votes. When the incumbent US President Barak Obama offered Huntsman the post of the US ambassador to China, he left his governor position only a year after the reelection, and in the period between 2009 and 2011 was a diplomatic representative of the US in China. Obama’s choice is connected first of all with the fact that previously Huntsman was US ambassador to Singapore and his work was quite successful. Huntsman is known for moderate views, he takes centrist positions. His ancestors were Mormon preachers and Huntsman himself belongs to this confession, which, most likely, will have a negative impact on his popularity among voters.
