Dr. James Mace, a noted US journalist, scholar, and public figure, would have celebrated his 56th birthday on February 18. All those who knew, loved, and respected him mourned the irreparable loss on this date. We are all aware of how badly Ukraine misses James Mace, particularly today. We are all grateful to him beyond words for what he accomplished for each of us. He struggled to awaken our national memory that had been deliberately put to what seemed to be eternal sleep. By doing so, he was also awakening our national dignity. After realizing what the totalitarian system had done to us, we received a chance to perceive our true selves, what we could have been and had to be: members of free society. Building culturally, politically, and spiritually free society in Ukraine will undoubtedly be the best tribute to the memory of James Mace.
