Gentle Eyes That Make Men Stronger

10 March, 2004 - 00:00

The Ukrainian army has servicewomen whose achievements are something that most young servicemen can only dream of. For example, Ukraine’s only female navigator, 1st Lt. Olena Demydchuk, serves in the Ukrainian Air Force mixed military transport regiment in Odesa. She has flown over 150 hours in her An-26. On March 8, she and over twenty thousand women who wear military uniforms to work received Women’s Day greetings from Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. In his greeting address, Ukraine’s Army Headquarters Chief Col. Gen. Oleksandr Zatynaiko recognized the need for representatives of the fair sex in the ranks of Ukraine’s military. “It is your spiritual generosity, bearing, and culture that largely determine the moral atmosphere of the units where you serve. When you look at them with your gentle eyes, men feel that they are wise, clever, noble, and even stronger,” he said.

Aside from flowers and kind words, by order of Ukraine’s Defense Minister twenty-one servicewomen received decorations For Valor and Honor, Badges of Honor, and Veteran of Military Service decorations for their commendable service.
