On December 7 the “fall of Lenin” reached Hlukhiv. The communal services of the city demolished the monument to Lenin. “We planned to do this officially tomorrow, but for some reason the surprise was made today in the morning. I think in such a way the communal services decided to congratulate Hlukhiv’s mayor on the Local Government’s Day,” public figure Olena Yeskina wrote on her Facebook page. She also added that another monument was demolished, to “a mass murderer, communist Tsyganok,” located at Hlukhiv’s Central Park.

As is known, Hlukhiv’s ex-mayor, ex-Regionnaire Yurii Burlaka, referring to an alleged initiative of the residents of the town, started to talk about restoring of the monument to Lenin. In January 2015 Michel Terestchenko sent a letter to Burlaka as a response. “I wrote that as long as the monument to the Soviet leader would be standing in Hlukhiv, there would be no monument to the Tereshchenko’s family. Lenin wanted to execute my grandfather, our family was forced to leave the country because of the Bolshevik regime and for whole life live with nostalgia for homeland. Besides, there is a Ukrainian law on de-Communization, which stipulates that Soviet symbols must be removed. And I can erect a monument to the Tereshchenko family myself after the Lenin Monument is demolished,” he said in an interview to Den/ The Day. So now, after the historical justice has been served, Michel Terestchenko as Hlukhiv’s mayor can fulfill his promise on erecting a monument to his ancestors.
