Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski has backed Ukraine’s intention to become a European Union member. He announced this in Krynica, Poland, where he attended a presentation of Ukrainian regions and joint Ukrainian-Polish projects as part of the XIII International Economic Forum of Central and Eastern European Countries, reports Deutsche Welle. Pres. Kwasniewski stressed that the EU would never close its door to the Balkan states, Turkey, or Ukraine even after its imminent expansion. He also expressed the hope that Poland and Ukraine would someday meet in the European Union. “The main thing Ukraine should do is make a strategic decision that such a great state with such a rich millennium of history must be part of the European organizations. Ukraine will make Europe better, more affluent, and stronger,” Pres. Kwasniewski emphasized. Organizers of the forum, also referred to as the Polish Davos, declared the National Bank of Ukraine Eastern Europe’s best financial organization of the year 2002. A Ukraine-Poland-European Union trilateral meeting was held September 5 within the framework of the International Economic Forum in Krynica.
