Kyiv film festival in a new “format”

22 February, 2011 - 00:00

Film experts, members of the Golden Globe Awards, the Venice Film Festival and the Film Festival in Palm Springs will be in charge of selecting films for the Kyiv International Film Festival (KIFF). The Day was informed about this by the KIFF organizers. The program of the Third KIFF, which will take place from June 2 through 6, will be lead by Eleonora Granata-Jenkinson (for seven years she was a festival programmer and member of the Venice Film Festival Selection Committee).

“The Kyiv Festival is still young, but ambitious,” says Granata-Jenkinson, “It’s good that the direction is betting on good cinema. With joint efforts we will make a saturated program, worthy of [the world’s] top festivals.” Under her guidance, the Third KIFF will present 2 competitive and more than 13 non-competitive programs. It is expected that around 150 films will be presented during the festival.

The festival committee includes such competent international cinema buffs as the Golden Globe’s selector Sergei Rachlin, the Palm Springs Films Festival programmer Alice Simon, and the cinematologist, film critic, member of the Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine, and author of more than 20 documentaries, Oksana Troshchanovska.

Let’s recall that the Kyiv International Film Festival was first held in 2009, when its president was the popular Ukrainian actor Bohdan Stupka (in December 2010 he declined the position). At the time, 37 films from 25 countries were presented. The Serbian director Goran Markovic’s motion picture The Tour was acknowledged as the best film. Last year, the first prize went to the Turkish director Atalay Tashdiken’s drama The Bogeyman.
