The Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in Ukraine asked The Day to take part in highlighting of cultural events which will take place in Riga, chosen this year as European Capital of Culture. The Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to Ukraine Dr. Argita Daudze told this when she came to the editorial office of the newspaper. “Because of the repair in the embassy I did not get your contacts, but I myself drew the conclusion that your newspaper is very good and interesting and pays serious attention to culture. A positive thing is that it is published in English, Russian, and Ukrainian. This is a very good help in learning of Ukrainian, and I task my colleagues with learning Ukrainian,” Ms. Ambassador said to Editor-in-Chief Larysa Ivshyna.
Ms. Ambassador, a historian, highly appreciated the projects of The Day, when she familiarized herself with The Day’s Library, photo albums, and the glossy edition Route No. 1. “I have come to the editorial office to see the place where the ideas and projects of The Day are born,” Ms. Daudze said.
“The interest to Ukrainian history is growing, therefore there is a sense to show everything in Latvia. This might be done in the new library, which will be launched in Riga on January 18,” Ms. Ambassador said. She meant the Palace of Light, designed as a ray, rising up from the bottom of a lake, which is of special mythological importance for Latvians. According to Ms. Daudze, the struggle for building the library was going on for 20 years and the construction works started only three years ago, in spite of the crisis. The ambassador saw a similar attitude to the temples of knowledge in Croatia, where the construction of a library in Zagreb continued in spite of bombing.
In the end Ms. Ambassador thanked the editor-in-chief for warm conversation and wonderful presents.
