The executive committee of the Lviv City Council (LCC) passed the measure tasking the LCC’s department of humanitarian policy’s bureau of culture with designing, fabrication, and installation of the plaque to a prominent Slavic linguist, historian of Ukrainian literature, literary and theater critic George Shevelov (Yurii Sherekh). The memorial sign will be installed on the front of 14 Konopnytska Street where the scholar resided in 1943-44.
According to the bureau of culture’s head Iryna Podoliak, “a number of citizens are willing to donate their own money to have the plaque fabricated. These citizens came up with a proposal to ask sculptor Roman Petruk to join the effort.”
The initiative to install a memorial plaque honoring George Shevelov saw preliminary discussion among the local intelligentsia. Mayor Andrii Sadovy supported it: “Knowing well all Leopolitans who went on to win world fame will benefit the house’s current residents as well as guests and citizens of the city.” The idea to commemorate the scholar in Lviv emerged after the memorial plaque to George Shevelov in Kharkiv was destroyed on September 25.
