The Ministry of Culture has asked UNESCO to protect sanctuaries and architecturally valuable objects located in Crimea. Minister of Culture Yevhen Nyshchuk told the press about his request during a briefing in Kyiv, as reported by the ministry’s press service.
“We call on UNESCO to help us preserve the Tauric Chersonesus sanctuary, as well as the other 6 of Ukraine’s 63 sanctuaries and architecturally valuable objects which are located in Crimea,” the minister said. He stated that his ministry had lost all access to cultural sites in Crimea. “We do not have physical access to protect those rarities and museum exhibits in Crimea which are invaluable not only for Ukraine, but also for the entire world,” Nyshchuk added.
According to him, Crimea also houses 900 valuable museum exhibits, and 300 of them are kept in the Tauric Chersonesus. “This is our great appeal to prevent looting and targeted theft of these exhibits,” Nyshchuk summed up.
The head of the ministry of culture recalled that the Tauric Chersonesus had been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013 as a Ukrainian state sanctuary.
