Korea urged Pyongyang to engage in dialogue

The first female president in the history of South Korea – Park Geun-hye expressed her hope that the Korean Democratic People’s Republic will abandon its nuclear ambitions and that the two countries would begin the process of trust recovery. She spoke about this in her inaugural speech on February 25.

The news were reported by Chinese news agency Xinhua. Candidate of the ruling Saenuri Party, 60-year old Park Geun-hye won the elections held on December 19, 2012 gaining 51.7 percent of the votes. The newly elected president began her speech before the 70,000 crowd of people with a promise to achieve “happiness for people and prosperity of culture of South Korea.” As expected, Park Geun-hye condemned the recent nuclear tests conducted by North Korea, but also noted that Seoul’s willing to start peace negotiations. “I urge North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions and enter the path of peace and common development,” said the president.
