Parliamentary Commission to Hand Over First Melnychenko Disc to Prosecutor General’s Office

24 April, 2001 - 00:00

Last Wednesday the Verkhovna Rada ad hoc commission investigating the disappearance of journalist Heorhy Gongadze decided to transfer to the Prosecutor General’s Office one disc of Major Melnychenko’s recordings the commission had received in early February. The disc along with a transcript of the recorded conversations, most of which deal with Gongadze, are to be handed over today. As a whole, according to Serhiy Holovaty, almost 70% of the recordings submitted by the commission have been transcribed.

Also last Wednesday, the PACE Committee of Ministers held an ambassadorial level meeting which raised the question of this organization being furnished with Melnychenko’s original recordings. “After the commission had turned to PACE for help in carrying out the expert examination, they (the Committee of Ministers) wanted to know if the original recordings exist. The original tapes have not yet been handed over either to Ukrainian agencies or PACE itself,” commented Oleksandr LAVRYNOVYCH, chairman of the investigative commission.
