An eco-friendly exhibit has been launched in Donetsk’s municipal gallery Art-Donbas. It showcases about 300 photos made by Ukrainian and Russian photographers from 15 seas of the world, including Ukrainian Black Sea shore scenery. Besides, one can see eco-friendly placards, which have been provided by the 4th Bloc Association, as well as an installation by the creative union ONI. Besides, during the exhibit the organizers are planning to hold various master classes, which will teach diving and foster environment-friendly thinking as well.

The problem of water pollution is very topical in Ukraine. According to Donetsk-based diver-photographer Oleh Fedin, Ukraine and its water bodies can be automatically included in the five most polluted water bodies in the world. A special position is occupied by the Sea of Azov, where photographer says there is neither visibility, nor living creatures. The exhibit is vivid proof of the state of Ukrainian seas, for out of 300 photos only the seascapes in the Black Sea shots are distinguished by their unappealing looks caused by man. In particular, those are the shores near Tarkhankut and Yalta. Of course, we can hardly say that such things do not exist in other seas. But in our country they are often disastrous.

As for Donetsk, this problem relates here both to city ponds, and Donetsk’s Kalmius River. During the action “Let’s make Ukraine cleaner” the activists removed lots of garbage from the banks. Besides, the cleaning works have long ago finished on the first city pond.

According to Kostiantyn Savinov, the head of the Main Department of Public Utilities of Donetsk City Council, environment-friendly thinking should be fostered in people, only then will they stop scattering rubbish. “It is important to ask ourselves: where does all the rubbish come from? People bring it, so it should be easy for them to take it away,” Savinov stated at the opening. According to him, Donetsk will soon have no problems with litter. The city plans to build a garbage recycling plant and place separate waste bins. As for the water bodies, no new garbage cans are to be placed nearby in the near future. “It costs six hryvnias to maintain one garbage can. If one increases the number of garbage cans in the city, the expenses will be huge. For the present moment there are 7,000 garbage cans in Donetsk which is enough for the city,” the head of the Main Department Public Utilities said.

According to the organizers, environment-friendly education is the most important thing to keep the environment clean and help the nature. For many people don’t know that waste should be pressed before throwing away, because the volume of the waste products, not the amount, is what matters. Besides, one should use recyclable and recycled materials, return batteries, paper, etc. This is probably the reason why the organizers decided to distribute the ecological multiple-usage bags for shopping among all the people present. In such a way they hope to reduce the number of polyethylene bags sold.

It is hard to tell whether the exhibit will help to develop environment-friendly thinking or becomes a drop in the sea. But the fact that the topic of ecology has been broached is absolutely positive.
