Several days ago, pictures from Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada have been showed across the continent — just as a comet flying over Europe. Quarrels, fights, and throwing eggs — this is a sort of picture that always makes a lot of attention. They are rare — but also that is nothing unusual. However, the scope of what has happened in the Ukrainian parliament exceeded what has happened previously in Italy, Spain or democracies of Central America. Just like with a comet — news were there fast and lasted for a short while. But the problem itself is still here. This problem is Europe’s reaction to an agreement that relates to the Black Sea fleet and gas. We are not aware of the consequences of this agreement, however, it needs to be said that the reactions are calm. The pragmatism of these decisions is understood widely. Nevertheless, the idea presented by President Putin on integration of the energy systems of Ukraine and Russian Federation is treated with mistrust. That is because, simply speaking, integration with Russian system means lack of integration with the energy system of Western Europe.
Nonetheless, this is a topic for a future discussion. At this moment, one should focus on the current situation. Latest developments in Verkhovna Rada force us to ask about the quality of the opposition. This is somewhat interesting since both — current government, and the current opposition can say everything about that. Yulia Tymoshenko as well as Victor Yanukovych have both been in the opposition. This question does not demand an answer neither on the consolidation nor on its size. What are the factors unifying people who step against their government? Is it only a will to return to power, or is it another idea to govern the country, organize economy, financial, healthcare or the fiscal systems? This is a question that has to be asked with regard to each state and each opposition party. This is why a lot of countries and political parties, including the socialist parties from the Western Europe, have a problem, how to prepare a proposal that will be an opposition to those at power, but will also recommend something to the society, that with regard to their everyday needs and life will be more attractive.
