Seven notes of the 77th season

Kyiv National Music Comedy Theater launches new season with a gala concert
15 September, 2011 - 00:00

According to the artistic director of the theater Bohdan Strutynsky, the first “note” of the season will be The Gypsy Baron by Johann Strauss II, a performance that is shown over the world along with the grand operas. It has very complicated ensembles and extremely complicated solo numbers. This will be not only a new production, but a whole new stage design. The premieres also include the famous Broadway musical Kiss me, Cate by Cole Porter following Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrewd.

“Last year we started to work on the ‘Muses of the King of Waltz,’ based on life and love stories of great composer Johann Strauss II. We’ve written libretto and held a great analytical work,” Strutynsky said, “Overall, eight premieres are on schedule. Soon The Theater of Fashion or the Story of one Couturier will appear on billboards. This is a story of a French artist, whose every period of life is marked with showing a collection of costumes. The new life in the Music Comedy Theater will be given to the comedy After two Hares by Vadym Ilyin and Vladlen Lukashov, and for the little ones the theater will stage a musical of the famous Ukrainian composer Volodymyr Bystriakov, Treasure Island. Currently the preparation of the projects From Duo to Septet and a retro evening is underway, which will gather the most popular fragments of the operettas of the last century from the 1930s to the 1980s,” the head of the capital’s Music Comedy Theater reports, “we have an idea to hold the summer musical soirees outdoors at the Troitska Square (near the theater), and if we wait till reconstruction, we will stage performances even on the roof. The theater has a renewed lineup of vocalists, choir, ballet dancers, and orchestra. Young, fresh voices and bright talents have come to us, the conservatoires and Theater Institute graduates: Tamara Khodakova, Oksana Madarash, Serhii Holubnychy, Ihor Yaroshenko. The production director Svitlana Pavlichenko’s work is very interesting. These are not accidental people, they are deeply devoted to theater.

“On August 29 we returned from the tour across Germany with the production My Fair Lady by Loewe (based on Bernard Show’s Pygmalion), we have been to Italy and the Netherlands, the concert was attended by 6,500 people, though the admission fee was 90 euros. In October we are going to Lithuania (Kaunas) with the concert ‘Viva operetta!’ and in November we will perform in Bucharest at the international festival of music theaters ‘Life is Beautiful!’ and will show Paul Abraham’s Ball at the Savoy.”
