St. Petersburg subway cars were hit with explosions at the stations Sennaya Ploshchad and Tekhnologichesky Institut on April 3, leaving 10 people dead.
Independent Russian journalist Semen Novoprudsky told The Day that so far, there was not enough information for drawing any far-reaching conclusions. “The only thing one can say,” he believes, “is that on the one hand, these explosions remind us that Russia is unable to fight terrorism in faraway countries, as no matter who organized this latest attack, it [terrorism. – Author] finds a way back to Russia anyway. On the other hand, of course, these explosions can be exploited by the Russian government as a political pretext for changing the agenda from that of the protests to that of security, and an explanation why we have such a large military budget, why we care so much about security.”
