Ukraine Loses Tupoliev’s Long- Range Flyers

29 May, 2001 - 00:00

Ukraine’s strategic aviation has come to an end. In Uzyn Kyiv oblast, under a Ukrainian and US defense agreement on the removal of Tu-160, Tu- 95 planes, and cruise missiles of air basing X-55, the last long-range flier of the Tupoliev family was dismantled. In February this year the Tu-160 was scrapped, as recently was Tu-95. The pride of Soviet aviation, the Tu-95 for over forty years had been in Soviet air arsenal. It was one of the most reliable planes, a threat to any enemy. Such aircraft, which were stationed in Uzyn, patrolled the neutral waters of the Arctic Ocean. This aircraft has a unique achievement in its record: with a stop to refuel it flew along the all borders of the former Soviet Union and could spend 36 hours 40 minutes in the air. One such plane in 1961 participated in a nuclear test. The plane was dismantled using a technology, which makes it impossible to reassemble.
