On May 17-18 Thomas Klestil, President of the Federal Republic of Austria, made the first official visit by an Austrian head of state to Ukraine.
During the course of the two day visit, scheduled for signing were official bilateral agreements on customs cooperation, on passenger carriage on regular international highway networks, and a protocol on cooperation in science and scholarship, supplementing a memorandum signed earlier between the Ukrainian Ministries of Culture and Education, on the one hand, and their Austrian counterparts on the other, reports Interfax-Ukraine.
The visit was intended to include bilateral talks between official delegations of both countries headed by their respective presidents. Austrian President Klestil also met separately with Ukrainian Premier Viktor Yushchenko, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ivan Pliushch, Foreign Minister Borys Tarasiuk, as well as with a group of Austrian businessmen taking part in an Austro-Ukrainian business seminar.
