Ukrainian Plane Seized in Greece

10 October, 2000 - 00:00

A Ukrainian Aerosvit plane was impounded last Thursday in the Greek airport of ThessalonТki following a court ruling over a damage suit filed by one of the families of victims of the Yak-42 crash in December 1997. The court decision, however, implies temporary holding, not permanent seizure, of the aircraft pending trial of this suit to be held November 21 this year, Interfax-Ukraine quotes the Embassy of Ukraine in Greece. The Ukrainian Embassy is taking legal actions to achieve early release of the aircraft. The plane was on a ThessalonТki-Kyiv flight. It will be recalled that on December 17, 1997, a Yak-42 passenger plane, leased by Aerosvit from Ukrainian Airlines, crashed in the vicinity of ThessalonТki, killing all seventy persons onboard, including 25 citizens of Ukraine, 34 of Greece, 1 of Germany, 2 of Poland, as well as 8 crew members.
