Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma’s visit to Moldova slated for February 20 has been postponed. The Moldovan presidential press service informed Interfax that this was because of the “need for more thorough preparation of the visit, in particular holding a sitting of the Moldovan-Ukrainian commission on issues of cooperation, within which a number of important documents are to be drawn up and signed.” Observers in Chi ю sin я au believe the delay can be also attributed to the complicated political situation in Ukraine. Yet another reason for it is the situation in Moldova with the campaign around pre- term parliamentary elections in full swing.
Leonid Kuchma and Petru Lucinschi also planned to visit Transnistria to meet with leader of the Tiraspol administration Ihor Smirnov. As Interfax told by sources in Transnistria, Chi ю sin я au and Tiraspol failed to agree to the meeting, with Smirnov insisting on meeting with Kuchma alone, while both the presidents of Ukraine and Moldova planned for all three to attend.
