In 2002-2003 UNESCO will finance five Ukrainian cultural projects totaling $77,000, in part, the St. Sophia State Preserve and the Church of the Savior on the Berestova, announced Chairman of the National Committee of Ukraine on UNESCO Affairs and Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Anatoly Orel. Thus objects of the cultural and historical heritage of Ukraine will be preserved. At one UNESCO meeting the world community was informed on measures taken to minimize negative impact on the St. Sophia Cathedral during construction work on the preserve territory, reports Interfax Ukraine. Also $10,000 was assigned for Hutsul ceremonies and traditions as the Koliada program within the framework of the Masterpieces of Oral and Nonmaterial Heritage of Mankind project. A provisional agreement was reached on conducting in Ukraine international seminars in 2002-2003 with the participation of UNESCO experts to define objects of natural and cultural heritage in Ukraine along with a seminar on issues of journalism. The possibility was discussed of renewing the publication of the UNESCO Courier magazine in the Ukrainian language in a new format. Currently the magazine’s publication is suspended.
