President Vladimir Voronin of Moldova has suggested that the Russian Federation be invited as observer to the GUUAM summit to be held June 6- 7 in Yalta, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova executive board announced on May 25. “The Republic of Moldova is against turning GUUAM (an informal association of Georgia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Moldova) into an instrument of political speculation. To avoid this, President Voronin suggested inviting Russia as observer to the coming summit,” Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nicolae Cernomaz said. “Moldova does not oppose or want to leave GUUAM. But it would be senseless and useless to institutionalize GUUAM without drawing up effective economic projects,” he noted.
