Oct. 14 Ukrainian Cossacks Day

1919: The Directorate and the army swear allegiance to the Ukrainian National Republic (UNR) in Kamianets-Podilsky.

2001: A monument to Symon Petliura, the head of the UNR Directorate, is unveiled in Rivne.

Oct. 15 1926: The Russian Drama Theater, named after Lesia Ukrainka, opens in 1939.

2004: The Kyiv-based aircraft plant Aviant and the Antonov Design Bureu (ANTK) finish the construction of the first AN-148 model.

Oct. 16 1890: The Russian-Ukrainian Radical Party is founded in Lviv.

1917: The All-Ukrainian Congress of Free Cossacks convenes in Chyhyryn, where the General Council headed by General Pavlo Skoropadsky is elected.

Oct. 17 1676: The Peace Treaty of Zurawno is signed by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Ottoman Empire. As a result, Turkey retains Podillia and part of Right-Bank Ukraine.

1961: The history-making 22nd Congress of the CPSU opens in Moscow to adopt the new statute and program of the party.

Oct. 18 1955: The Kakhivka Hydpropower Station begins operations on the Dnipro River.

2001: The’ Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passes the new bill “On the Election of People’s Deputies of Ukraine.”

Oct. 19 1653: Envoys from Muscovy, led by Vasilii Buturlin, leave for Periaslav to accept the Zaporozhian Host’s oath of allegiance to the tsar.

1989: The Republican Association of Ukrainian Studies holds its founding assembly.

Oct. 20 1924: Ukraine’s first radio station starts broadcasting from Kharkiv.

1995: The all-Ukrainian Orthodox Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC KP), elects Metropolitan Filaret patriarch of the UOC KP.
