Oct. 16 1890: The Ruthenian-Ukrainian Radical Party is founded in Lviv.

1917: The All-Ukraine Congress of Free Cossacks convenes in Chyhyryn. It elects the General Council and its chairman, General Pavlo Skoropadsky.

Oct. 17 1676: Poland and Turkey sign a peace treaty in Zhuravne. According to its terms, Turkey retains Podillia and part of Right-Bank Ukraine.

1961: The “fateful” 22nd Congress of the CPSU convenes in Moscow and adopts the party’s new statute and program.

Oct. 18 1955: The Kakhivka Hydroelectric Station begins operating on the Dnipro River.

2001: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passes the bill “On the Election of People’s Deputies of Ukraine.”

Oct. 19 1653: Muscovite envoys led by V. Buturlin travel to Chyhyryn to take the Zaporozhian Host’s oath of allegiance to the Muscovite tsar.

1989: The founding assembly of the Republican Association of Ukrainian Studies takes place.

Oct. 20 1924: Ukraine’s first radio station starts broadcasting from Kharkiv.

1995: The All-Ukraine Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Kyiv Patriarchate) ordains Metropolitan Filaret Patriarch of the UOC-KP.

Oct. 21 1897: The Chornomorsky Shipyard begins operations in Mykolaiv.

1989: Lviv hosts the founding assembly of the revived Shevchenko Scientific Society.

Oct. 22 1918: Kamianets State University opens in the city of Kamianets-Podilsky.

1995: President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine addresses a session of the UN’s General Assembly, commemorating the 50th anniversary of this world organization.
