Sept. 4 1928: The Radnarkom of the Ukrainian SSR adopts a new Ukrainian orthography (“Skrypnyk’s”) that will remain in effect until 1933.

1965: A rally protesting a new wave of political repressions against the Ukrainian intelligentsia unfolds during the premiere of Paradzhanov’s film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors at the Ukraine Cinema in Kyiv.

Sept. 5 1924: Members of the Ukrainian Military Organization (UVO) make an attempt on the life of Polish President Stanislaw Wojciechowski in Lviv.

1990: An international symposium is convened in Kyiv to investigate the scope of the Holodomor tragedy in Ukraine (1932-33), the manmade nature of which was officially refuted until this time.

Sept. 6 1672: Hetman Petro Doroshenko of Ukraine captures Kamianets-Podilsky.

1994: Ukraine and Communist China sign agreements on cooperation in the spheres of maritime trade, and postal and electronic communications during an official visit to Ukraine by Chinese leader Jiang Zemin.

Sept. 7 1989: The founding assembly of the Rukh People’s Movement of Ukraine convenes in Kyiv.

1994: A constitutional coup is attempted in the Crimea. The Crimean parliament resolves to set up a parliamentary republic.

Sept. 8 1619: Yakub Havatovych’s two Ukrainian interludes are first staged in Kamianka Strumylova.

1944: The 1st and 4th Ukrainian Fronts launch the Eastern-Carpathian offensive to liberate Ukraine’s western oblasts from the Nazis.

Sept. 9 1913: Kyiv-born military pilot Petro Nesterov performs the world’s first loop, one of whose elements will become known as aerobatics.

1961: The Ukrainian Ballet on Ice performs for the first time in Kyiv.

Sept. 10 1919: During the Paris Peace Conference the Allied and Central Powers sign an agreement affirming the collapse of Austria- Hungary and recognizing Romania’s right to Bukovyna and Czechoslovakia’s right to Transcarpathia (Zakarpattia).

1988. The Golden Duke All-Union Popular Film Festival opens in Odesa.
