July 31 1924: The Polish government bans the use of the Ukrainian language in government institutions of Eastern Halychyna.

1996: Ukraine generates an interministerial database on drug trafficking, known in Ukrainian as “narkobiznes.”

August 1 1923: The Central Executive Committee of the USSR and the Ukrainian SSR adopt measures to secure the equal status of languages and to foster the development of the Ukrainian language.

1977: The Central Artist’s House opens in Kyiv.

August 2 1914: The Ukrainian Sich Sharpshooters’ Command Administration is formed as the organizing and coordinating center of the Legion of Sich Sharpshooters of Ukraine.

1990: The Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR resolves to establish a moratorium on the construction of new nuclear power and extra-capacity radar stations on the republic’s territory.

August 3 1935: The Radnarkom of the Ukrainian SSR resolves to include physical education in the primary and secondary school curricula.

1990: The Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR adopts the Law on the Economic Independence of the Ukrainian SSR.

August 4 1687: A Cossack council held at the Kolomak River elects Ivan Mazepa hetman of Ukraine. Certain issues are negotiated with the government of Moscow, known as the Kolomak Clauses, including provisions for a 30,000-strong registered Cossack force, along with preserving their rights and privileges.

2001: President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine begins his official visit to Bulgaria.

August 5 1919: The Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine is formed under Nestor Makhno’s command.

1957: Zaporizhstal’s new 430-ton open hearth furnace produces the first batch of molten steel.

August 6 1944: Soviet troops liberate Drohobych in the course of the 4th Ukrainian Front’s Lviv-Sandomir operation.

1975. The Supreme Soviet of the USSR resolves to confer the Friendship of Nations Order on the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, in recognition of its meritorious performance in the development of science, economy, and culture.
