On October 7, Kyiv cyclists held a protest action next to the Kyiv City Council building. According to UNIAN reports, they demanded that the deputies vote for the draft bylaw “On establishing free parking lots for bicycles and motorcycles in Kyiv.”
Let’s recall that the Kyiv authorities have repeatedly made statements about their intentions to set up bicycle parking lots. In particular, it was reported on April 1, 2009, that the Kyiv City State Administration (KMDA) planned to build fee-based parking lots for cyclists.
The creation of fee-based parking lots for bicycles was, in the KMDA’s words, intended “to encourage bicycle use by the city’s residents, and improve the ecological situation in Kyiv and the health of city dwellers.” However, to date neither fee-based nor free bicycle parking lots have appeared in the capital. Nearly 15, 000 people use bicycles as a means of transport in Kyiv. The first separate track for cyclists is currently under construction; it will run along the Zdolbunivska St. in Pozniaky District.
As of September 29, there were only 200 meters of track built. According to KMDA’s decision, the grand total of three tracks should appear in the capital.
