The Defense Ministry of Ukraine announced that our military sappers want to participate in UN-financed operations aimed at freeing the territory of the former Yugoslavia from antipersonnel and other types of mines. The work involves high risks and thus is well paid.
According to the corps of engineers head, General Volodymyr Vorobiov, the Foreign Ministry handed over to them a few offers, regarding possible participation in well-paid anti-mine tenders. War in the former Yugoslavia spread over 12 million mines around former battle lines. The work of the sapper is estimated at between $300 and $1000 per square meter of checked land.
Non-governmental companies from England, Germany, and France are actively working in the Balkans now. Will Ukraine be able to compete with the foreigners? General Vorobiov said, “They will take us right away, if we charge them less.” And that is the point.
