The government and the National Bank of Ukraine intend to ensure stability
of the hryvnia in 1999 within a currency corridor of Hr 3.40-4.60 to one
US dollar, Deputy Premier Serhiy Tyhypko announced on February 9. Until
recently, Ukraine was using a no-time-limit currency corridor of Hr 2.50-3.50
to the dollar introduced in early September 1998. In the past four months
the official exchange rate to the dollar has been Hr 3.427. The 1999 budget
is based on the rate of four hryvnias per dollar.
