NATO Supreme Commander in Europe General Breedlove visited Ukraine on November 26, it being the third Ukrainian visit by a senior US official to occur lately. It happened just days after US Vice President Joe Biden left the country, and Biden’s trip followed a less visible visit by head of the Military Committee of NATO.
The Day asked the general about prospects for a military solution to the crisis in the Donbas, as Vladimir Putin understands only the language of force. He replied:
“I would not give up on diplomatic means at this point, because most nations of the West have agreed that if there is a solution, it must be primarily diplomatic. We clearly understand that force has its own voice, but right now, we see a diplomatic way forward here, in Ukraine. As part of our efforts to assist Ukraine, we are going to help Ukraine’s military to increase its capacities and capabilities in cooperation with the US command in Europe. Our joint commission is working on that.”
