The facility was visited recently by 12 juvenile convicts who are registered with penitentiary inspection units of Kyiv. The staff organized a study tour for young offenders.
“The purpose of this activity is to prevent the commission of further crimes by the juveniles. Our task today is to show the teenagers the likely end result of their bad actions if they stay on that path,” head of the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine (SPSU)’s joint Kyiv City and Kyiv region directorate Oleksandr Dorobaliuk said. “I hope that after seeing firsthand the life behind the bars, they will give a serious thought to their actions and lifestyle, and every one of them will draw an appropriate conclusion.”
During the tour, its participants visited the prison’s service yard, maintenance units, blocks housing female and juvenile prisoners, and the exercise yard. The children toured the secure facility, witnessed the conditions of prisoners’ life and talked to some of them. The prisoners readily described their bitter experience and impressions of life in prison. As the tour ended, the boys claimed that they now had a different perspective on life, having realized that re-offending would lead to a life without freedom, family, or friends as well as make self-fulfillment impossible.
According to the press service of the SPSU’s joint Kyiv City and Kyiv region directorate, 9,203 convicts, including 120 juveniles, are registered with local units of the penitentiary inspection.
