There are several legends about the history of the holiday, but they all boil down to the fact that during one of the sieges of Constantinople by Ruthenians led by Askold (in another version by Saracens) in 910 the city was in danger.

Then the city residents turned in prayer to Holy Virgin asking for deliverance and when she stood up to defend the city it was saved.
