1037: Chronicles mention the foundation by Prince Yaroslav the Wise of Kyivan Rus’ first library at St. Sophia’s Cathedral in Kyiv.

1648: Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s army defeats Polish troops at Pilavtsi.

1943: Soviet troops win the Battle of Kursk, marking a fundamental turning point in WW II. Kharkiv is liberated.

1975: The first section of the Kharkiv subway, the second in Ukraine and sixth in the USSR, starts functioning.

1988: American-Soviet Walk for Peace continues from Odesa to Kyiv.

1995: The Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise of the president of Ukraine (Grade 1-5) is instituted.

2004: The president of Ukraine signs an edict establishing Flag Day on August 23.
