The young Ukrainian architects Kateryna Yarova and Andrii Rodych won the first prize in the Architecture category of the Creative Polygon-2012 competition in Moscow, having presented a single-family mansion design. This competition is a good start for young architects and a platform for self-realization. The design is called Desert Rose, and its authors divided tasks when doing it, with Yarova responsible for architecture and creative dimension of the design, that is, creating its visual, textual and ideological image, while Rodych was in charge of its visualization.

“This design is an example of the modern idea of ??a single-family mansion, as porticos or columns are there no more. The design concept is based on combining contrasting elements, ‘cold’ concrete with ‘warm’ wood and brass. The main objective of the design is creation of a mansion of many shapes. The main facade’s dominant is dynamic, enclosed space made mostly of concrete. Other facades are gradually becoming more homely-looking as we are moving away from the main one. The terrace-overlooking facade called for greatest inspiration, and I applied tinted mirror panels in the first floor facing there. These elements make the floor to vanish from sight, like a mirage on a hot day,” Yarova describes her work.

The Creative Polygon-2012 set design concept’s compliance with its technical realization as the foremost evaluation criterion, but standard requirement remained, calling for provision of 3D-views of key scenes that would reveal the idea, mood, and philosophy of the design. Desert Rose received the award in the Best Visual Representation category.

COMMENTARY

Yurii SHKODOVSKY, rector of Kharkiv National University of Construction and Architecture, Doctor of Architecture, professor, Honored Architect of Ukraine:

“Young architects are different from previous generations of architects in that they, due to the changed political and social situation, are freer from the stereotypical thinking and rigid standards that were previously dictated by the state. We observe intellectual progress in architecture and construction nowadays, this is a distinctive feature of the younger generation, it is not an easy work, but it is worth the effort. The Creative Polygon is a competition of the new, modern type, appealing to people who value creative freedom. It is very prestigious among young architects. I believe that this is a serious victory, which allows the designer pair to gradually gain prestige. With regard to the design itself, I would say that it is an original building using completely new, non-traditional form. Its artistic approach and theme interpretation are excellent, too, as from a philosophical point of view, the building is a true creative symbol which provides the conditions for creativity and openness, because it uses a lot of glass and interesting spatial systems. This imagery of the building can do tricks with space.”
