The museum of the Lviv National Academy of Arts is hosting a solo exhibit of Roksolana Shafran’s parchment tempera-pen graphics.

“The artist’s latest creative searches are associated with particular expressive properties of parchment as a material, especially its texture and facture, as the form of an artwork, and as a 3D sculptural original of graphic compositions,” says Lada TSYMBALA, Ph.D. in Art Research, an associate professor at the History and Theory of Arts Department of the Lviv National Academy of Arts. “In most cases, the particular structure of the abstract ornamental compositions, which the artist models, are caused by an irregular contour of parchment sheets, their cartouche-like refractions, or a rugged surface.

“The range of graphic decisions in monumental parchments varies with the stylistics of art nouveau, constructivism, or art deco – up to the true Easter egg ornamentalism which fully covers a work’s surface with a net-like pattern. This artistic experiment with the specifics of the material, coupled with the folk tradition and a highly-professional way of execution, forms am inimitable individual manner of Shafran’s graphics and mirrors the processes now underway in the context of the formation of a national model of contemporary Ukrainian art.”
