From November 17 onwards, the Manufaktura art gallery hosts an exhibit of the young Kyiv-based artist Dmytro Koval. The artist called his exposition “Waiting for the Sun,” and rightly so – when it is late autumn around, it often rains and even snowflakes are sometimes flying past, you long for something warm and bright. Koval’s works can make you dream, and you wish to watch them on and on.
The main trends in the painter’s oeuvre are impressionism and pointillism which Koval has synthesized with abstract and decorative art, forming a special style of his own.
The bulk of the exposition is the series “Ukrainian Prayer” which covers the period of 2012 to 2017.
“Being an artist is a very hard road,” Koval shares his reflections in an interview. “And the farther we go down it, the more difficult it is for us. When I had just begun my first year at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, teachers said: ‘Out of all of you, only one, at best, will make an artist who will live in order to create.’ So my advice is: be this ‘one.’ Only those who make great efforts to improve themselves will achieve the desired result.”
Dmytro Koval was born Khotyn, Chernivtsi oblast, western Ukraine. He graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture. Koval’s student project “Ukrainian Prayer, or Souls of the Dead” was voted the best work of 2016, and the artist won the Academy’s gold medal. Besides, he has participated in many national and international exhibits. He was awarded the Viktor Puzyrkov Prize in 2011 and the Viktor Shatalin Prize in 2013. His works are exhibited at the museums of Zaporizhia and Chernivtsi and in private collections not only in Ukraine, but also abroad.
The exhibit “Waiting for the Sun” will remain open until January 19.
