The first magnolias have come into flower in Uzhhorod. An untold beauty – Magnolia kobus – is also known as one of the most frost-resistant varieties. The plant blossomed next to the Transcarpathian Oblast Administration building. As for Japanese cherry trees, the first of them bloomed in Mukacheve. Some blossom clusters are only beginning to come into flower in Uzhhorod.

The Day has inquired with academics about when the boom of tree blossom can be expected this year.

“The blooming of Japanese cherries and other trees in the Transcarpathian oblast center fully depends on weather conditions. It is now cool outdoors, but once the temperature goes up and nights grow warm, blossoms will begin to run riot. Japanese cherries have come out of latency – they are in a top form. As for Magnolia kobus, it blooms differently in various years. Sometimes it used to bloom earlier,” says Oleh Kolesnyk, an associate professor at the Botany Department of Uzhhorod National University’s Biology School.

It is planned this year to hold a theme festival in Uzhhorod during the blossom of Japanese cherry trees in mid-April.
