The Kyiv City Council approved a program for schoolchildren of grades 1 to 4, indicating that the city authorities have finally started caring about young Kyivites’ health. The decision to hold exercises every morning for schoolchildren of grades 1 to 4 was supported by 83 deputies at the council’s regular plenary meeting. The program’s implementation should help improve the health of pupils in the capital, as well as prevent various illnesses among this group. The program itself was developed by the council, partly answering the call of Kateryna Serebrianska, the chairwoman of the Sports Development Foundation, a charity organization. According to the Committee on Health and Social Welfare chairwoman Alla Shlapak, the effects of systematically conducting morning exercises should include improved functioning of children’s musculoskeletal system, preventing flat feet, and improved posture. It is expected that the exercise regime recommended by Ms. Serebrianska will significantly improve the children’s health. In order to achieve meaningful results, however, it is probable that such training sessions should also be held after lessons.
