On April 27, the 20 th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, the National Opera of Ukraine will host the charity concert “Requiem” organized by the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation (supervisory board chairperson: Kateryna Yushchenko) and the Diplomat Service Company.

“Almost every family has suffered tragic and sorrowful consequences of that disaster,” says Diplomat Service’s director-general Denys Kudin, adding, “Many families abandoned their homes. The list of courageous people who fought the fire contains hundreds — no, thousands — of names. Fifty-seven thousand square kilometers of Ukrainian territory were destroyed. Although 20 years have passed, we are still feeling the aftereffects of that night in 1986. The concert is an important contribution made by Ukrainian society to perpetuating the memory of all those liquidators, who at the cost of their own lives took part in the Chornobyl rescue operations.”

The concert program includes movements from classical requiems and works by world and Ukrainian classics, including Yevhen Stankovych, Valentyn Silvestrov, and Giuseppe Verdi.

A few days before the concert, on April 24-26, foreign delegations, including prime ministers, ministers, foreign ministers, and parliamentary speakers, will arrive in Kyiv to attend a conference on the Chornobyl disaster. They will attend the concert marking the end of the conference.

According to the organizers, funds raised by this project will be handed over to Ukraine 3000 and spent on medical assistance for children from the Chornobyl zone.
