The passengers of Kyiv metro have had an opportunity recently to observe an unusual event. Several dozens of people were riding the escalator at “Polytechnic Institute” station, reading a book, a magazine or a mobile device. The flashmob was initiated by the Youth section of the International Library Association. “Our social action aims to support the culture of reading and to show that reading is possible in a variety of formats, particularly in transport,” Oksana Boiarynova, chairman of the section, told The Day. The core of the mob was formed by young librarians who gathered this day in Kyiv to a congress. But there were many common citizens, especially the young, who learned about the event via the social networks. The other passengers watched the event with curiosity, taking photos and videos. As it was a working day, some of the intended participants were not able to join. In the future the organizers want to repeat the flashmob on weekend at “Arsenalna,” the deepest metro station in the world.
