Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

Oksana Bilozir’s Roman Holiday

18 June, 2002 - 00:00

Around ten thousand Ukrainians came from various Italian cities to Oksana Bilozir’s concert in St. Sophia Square in Rome. In this way our compatriots together with the popular singer celebrated Emigration Day. Even the changeable weather could not mar the public’s cheerful mood. The rain, sun, and gusts of wind replaced each other, but nobody left the square. People made makeshift umbrellas and raincoats from plastic bags. Oksana’s show lasted an hour and a half, after which the singer socialized with the public. It appeared that among those present there were not only Ukrainians but numerous Italians who listened to the songs with interest even without understanding the language. “I was pleased to see such a sincere and cordial public,” Ms. Bilozir shared her impressions after the concert. “People sang together with me with an expression of mixed joy and sorrow on their faces. After the show a lady, thanking me for my performance, said that while listening to my songs her feet began to dance and her eyes and soul cried. Many of those present at the concert went to Italy in search for better lot, but nostalgia for the homeland remains.”

At present the singer is negotiating with the Western Union department in Rome over a concert tour in Italy. Organizers of the San Remo song festival also turned to her with a proposal to take partt.
