1796: Volyn, Kyiv, Little Russian, Novorossiysk, and Podillia gubernias are formed as part of the Russian empire.

1820: A Russian expedition, led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev, discovers Antarctica.

1897: Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater is founded in Kyiv.

1929: The First Congress of Ukrainian Nationalists convenes in Vienna and establishes the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists.

1930: Kyiv hosts a Bolshevik-orchestrated emergency church council that abolishes the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church and the All-Ukrainian Orthodox Church Council.

1992: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopts a resolution on the Blue-Yellow National Flag of Ukraine.

2005: President Viktor Yushchenko of Ukraine addresses the World Economic Congress in Davos, focusing on the main trends in Ukraine’s development.
