Valentyn NALYVAICHENKO: Opposition can be saved only with new faces

9 February, 2012 - 00:00

The negotiations of the opposition within the Dictatorship Resistance Committee about united actions are a kind of a test. Can they adhere to the declared principles or does everyone still want to pull the blanket over himself? On February 6 Valentyn Nalyvaichenko, head of the political council of the Party Our Ukraine was the guest of The Day. He said right away that the opposition needs a single list of candidates for majority constituency. Is it still possible? Nalyvaichenko said: “Opposition can be saved only with new faces. I would do my best to bring the leaders of public organizations into the new parliament. We must unlock this vicious circle.” Besides, we asked Mr. Nalyvaichenko about the most recent news – how he would comment on the appointment of the new head of the SBU Ihor Kalinin:

“It is not so important who is appointed, the main thing is what function this person performs. If the new head will collapse the KGB instructions and will turn the SBU into what Ukrainians expect from this institution, it will be good. When will Russian FSB leave our country? Why do we need Russian intelligence agency especially in Sevastopol? Those questions have to be answered. If he will go back to implementation of the principles, including further de-KGBzation, that means the continuation of what was started by Yevhen Marchuk and continued during my time in office, it will be good. Today we have to go further and return personal files to the families, return property to local communities. The next task will be the fight against terrorism. In the past years there already have been a couple of cases of terrorist attacks in our country and the intelligence agency hasn’t answered the question about who has organized the attacks, who financed them, etc. By the way, in 2008 I created a unit of state cyber security – this is also an up-to-date issue. The website of Viktor Yushchenko was attacked many times too but it has never collapsed. The website of the MIA has never been dropped from its server. Cyber security is another issue the new head of the SBU will have to face.”
