1919. The Provisional Worker-Peasant Government of Ukraine passed a decree on the separation of church from state.
January 19: 1906. The weekly Shershen (Hornet), the first satirical revolutionary magazine in the history of Ukrainian journalism, appeared in Kyiv.
1992. The URP and Rukh initiated a ceremonial oath-taking by reserve officers who were citizens of Ukraine.
January 20: 1918. The People’s Secretariat passed a decree on the formation of in Ukraine of the (fictional) workers’ and peasants’ Red Army.
1945. One of Ukraine’s oldest book repositories, the Central Research Library, was reopened in Kharkiv.
January 21: 1934. The XII Congress of KP(b)U resolved to transfer the capital of Ukraine from Kharkiv to Kyiv.
1990. A living chain was lined up between Kyiv and Lviv in honor of the proclamation of the Day of Ukrainian Unity.
January 22: 1992. The first Congress of Ukrainians was held in Kyiv.
January 23: 1918. Ukraine proclaims independence in the Fourth Universal of the UNR.
1919. In Kyiv, the Directory of the Ukrainian People’s Republic proclaimed the unification of all Ukrainian lands in one Ukrainian state, now observed as the Day of Ukrainian Unity. The Khotyn uprising against the Rumanian occupation of Besarabia began.
1992. Ukraine and the US exchanged notes on the establishment of full-scale diplomatic relations.
January 24: 1944. The troops of the First and Second Ukrainian Fronts began the Korsun- Shevchenkivsk offensive operation.
1996. A Memorandum on Cooperation between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Sejm of Lithuania was signed in Vilnius.
