Last battle is perhaps the best description of the Supreme Court’s hearing of the Yanukovych team’s grievances which began yesterday. The ex-premier’s lawyers and affiliated MPs insist that the Supreme Court must annul the December 26 runoff’s turnout. Viktor Yanukovych poses as a champion of civil rights vested primarily in elderly and physically handicapped citizens, claiming such individuals were largely denied the constitutional right to cast their ballots due to the legal at-home voting restrictions. Such is the legal crux of the matter. The political context is clearly apparent. Yanukovych’s team is focusing on what they claim is the dubious/unlawful nature of electing Viktor Yushchenko President of Ukraine. They are fighting a losing battle, but they are determined to fight to the last man. They want to save their face before their electorate and rally their forces to combat the new government. Most experts and analysts view their chances as very slim. Viktor Yanukovych started his political day yesterday by saying that he didn’t trust the Supreme Court and that he felt skeptical about its ruling, anyway.
